winter
so far i have been surviving the winter here in NY nicely. apparently it has been a mild one, but still, i think my skin is getting thicker (or maybe it’s just the amazing coat my mom gave me at Christmas). the sun has been shining a lot which is heaven. it’s been too long since i’ve written or posted here as i feared might happen. it’s called “getting busy” aka getting jobs, interviewing, searching for them, meeting people, connecting, playing shows, practicing, making music videos, booking shows, walking the dog, making peanut butter and honey sandwiches, nannying, etc etc etc. life. it happens.
so i will try to pop in at least once a week because actually i miss it and it is good for me to release a bit of all my intake, my discoveries…to share them with “you”.
magical things i have seen lately:
1. the snow that two weeks ago…photos below. it really transforms the city, at least at first, into a quiet, white paradise. then the slush happens, brown and wet. ug.
2. the MOMA which is free every Friday evening…i’ve gone twice but this last time was less crowded so i stayed longer and was blown away by things like Monet’s “Waterlilies” and Leo Villareal’s “Field”. they also have some great Cy Twombly, my favorite Chagall painting “I and the Village” and my favorite new discovery Marcel Broodthaers. art does fun things to my brain.
3. Prospect Park ceases to amaze me with it’s beauty. in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson “In the woods, is perpetual youth”. my feelings exactly…like i am a child again with no worries or care, just the winding path ahead and the sun above.
4. the old wooden escalators at Macy’s…i know this sounds trite but again, coming from the spritely young town of Austin, anything ancient like this is always a great discovery for me. i went wedding dress shopping with a friend there who is getting married and it was pretty fun and romantically nostalgic (simply from movies i’ve seen) being at that classic Macy’s at 34th St/Herald Square.
5. walking in the fog along 5th Ave. from 33rd St down to 8th St. listening to Radiohead. there are little vignettes or movie reels you can magically create simply by putting your headphones on and setting a mood with music. this city is so “cinematic” it is very easy to go there.
that’s all i can think of for now. i remain inspired and constantly transformed by this new city i call home. i will continue to post on a regular basis to keep track of the transformation. ; )
